The Morning Bench

Her name was Maria, simply. A widow. Two sons. One in prison. The other abroad.

Every morning, she would come and sit on a bench facing the school. She would watch other people's children.

One day, a little girl sat down beside her, crying.

Maria asked nothing and handed her a handkerchief. Then a story. Then a milk bread roll.

They did not speak anymore. But the next day, the little girl came back. Then other children.

Maria did not speak much. But she listened like no one else.

And slowly, she became the invisible guardian of the neighborhood. Not a social worker. Not a teacher. Not a therapist. A mother.

The one who carries without asking for anything, without shining, but without whom, nothing grows.
