The Echo

His first name was Étienne, director of a large NGO, respected because he was a brilliant strategist. He had led campaigns, negotiated agreements, and raised millions for noble causes. Wow, what a guy!
But he carried an invisible weight, well-hidden under the rug. For he had made a “pragmatic” decision in a forgotten region that left families behind. We cannot save everyone…
And he had moved on, going from screens to planes, to interviews.
Some evenings, when he was left alone, he would see the face of a child who asked for nothing but to live and… who saw everything.
He tried to forget. It was without counting on the Accuser, who did not shout in his head but whispered constantly, “You knew, you chose, you moved on. By the way, did you sacrifice him in the name of the common good or for your personal glory?”. Étienne gave even more, worked more, spoke louder, but the inner silence grew.
One day he fell ill in a remote village and had to lie there, with nothing to do and nothing to prove. An old woman looked after him and said to him, “It is not your mistake that is eating away at you, it is your flight.” He did not answer and burst into tears. He cried for the first time in his life. It was beautiful.
The following night, the Accuser returned and said nothing. He sat next to him in silence. They remained there for a long time. A long time. And when Étienne stood up again, nothing had changed, but everything was different.
