Light and Trial: two forces not to be confused

Figure: Shadow and Light
In the modern popular imagination, Lucifer and Satan are often confused. They become synonymous with “evil,” the “rebel,” the “devil.”
But in ancient traditions, and especially in the symbolic perspective that this book explores, they embody two very different psychic and social functions:
Lucifer acts through an excess of autonomy. Satan acts through rigor and friction. One wants to create a world in his own image. The other verifies if this world is viable.
